I get asked this question a lot as a certified makeup artist, do I need a primer? What does it even do? How do I use it? Well folks, I'm here to answer your questions and calm your fears about the magnificent world of primers, so let's get this party started!!
The first, and my most typical type of primer, is the eye primer. This is used on the eyelid to make eyeshadow stay better as well as making the pigmentation much better. It increases the lasting power of the shadow so it doesn't slip and slide, even on greasy lids. Here are some examples of eyelid primers:
The Three primers here are; Too Faced Primed and Poreless, Smashbox photo Ready, and Elf Poreless Face Primer. Now, the Too Faced is my Holy Grail but the ELF is a great drugstore substitute for higher end face primers. Primers for the face can do everything from color correct to eliminate pores, as the Smashbox line demonstrates. The main focus of a primer, though, is to help your makeup stay- the same as a setting spray but used beforehand. They help your makeup to keep from sliding around and from sinking into your pores and fine lines (trust me ladies and gentlemen, we all have them). To apply, just squirt smaller than a dime size amount onto your fingers and massage all over your face and slightly down your neck. This way, if you take your makeup down your neck like you should it will still be protected. Some primers have sunscreen in them and those you want to avoid if you are going somewhere there will be a lot of flash photography because there are white particles in the sunscreen that will make it bounce back and give you a white cast in the photo. Now, onto eye primers!
Again, here we have three choices, two high end and one drugstore; Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, MAC Prep and Primer, and Fergie Wet n Wild primer. Everyone knows about the Urban Decay primer, it's the most saught after primer in the makeup world and recently they have changed their packaging from the squeeze tube back to the doe foot applicator. You need just the teensiest tiniest amount to put on each eyelid with these because they spread beautifully and a little goes a very long way. The idea of the eye primer is that it is meant to keep your eyeshadow in place and looking vibrant, which these all do beautifully. I wouldn't have picked them to show to you if I didn't think they looked beautiful or worked really well. All you have to do is put a tiny dab of product on your finger and then place it on your eyelid and smooth it out and then continue with eyeshadow appliation as normal. See? Simple as that.
